A real question
Do we have enough? A reassuring-looking number is not the same as knowing.
About Retireomics
Retireomics is an inspectable retirement decision model - a retirement planning tool that shows its work.
Operated by Digital Web Team, LLC.
I wanted to know whether our retirement picture held together, not just whether a single total looked large enough. Retireomics grew from that question and from the need to see what was driving the answer.
Do we have enough? A reassuring-looking number is not the same as knowing.
Social Security, taxes, Medicare, spending, withdrawals, and savings affect one another.
A result is easier to discuss when you can see what was entered, assumed, and derived.
Bring a clearer starting point and better questions to your spouse or a professional.
Why a personal retirement question became a product.
I spent more than 35 years in enterprise IT sales - at Hewlett-Packard, Forrester, and IDC - and later ran a digital marketing company. Complex technology projects, budget decisions, and executive priorities were part of my daily work.
My own retirement plan, however, was a different story. Social Security timing, Roth conversions, tax-aware withdrawals, Medicare costs, withdrawal order, and legacy goals were complex enough that I kept putting them off.
Then my wife asked, "Do we have enough?" I did not have a clear answer. The numbers looked fine, but "looked fine" was not the same as knowing. I wanted a better way to prepare for a conversation with a professional - a way to understand our starting position and ask better questions before that conversation began.
I did not want to create a complicated tool that asks a hundred questions before showing anything useful. I wanted a practical first pass: enough detail to show how the connected pieces interact, without pretending that a model can replace personal advice.
The standards Retireomics tries to hold as it grows.
A number matters more when you can inspect the assumptions and formulas behind it.
Every model simplifies something. Retireomics names the limits instead of hiding them.
You can begin with estimates and refine them later when better records are available.
The model can show a tradeoff. Deciding what to do still belongs to you and your advisers.
What you should be able to take away from a model run.
Retireomics is designed to help you understand the picture before you make a decision or ask someone else to help you make one. A useful model run should leave you with:
That is the role Retireomics is meant to play: an educational planning tool that helps you see the moving parts and prepare for a more informed conversation.
Retireomics is not financial, investment, tax, legal, Social Security, Medicare, insurance, or fiduciary advice. It is not designed to replace a qualified professional or a complete financial plan. Its job is narrower: make a starting picture and the questions around it easier to see.
